This letter greeted customers at the Coop branch at Zurich Altstetten train station on Thursday evening.

Nothing worked at the Coop registers on Thursday evening: Customers could either pay with cash or had to leave the branch without making a purchase. Because, as many reader reporters reported, the entire payment system had crashed. Starting at 6.30pm – right in the middle of closing time – all the cards at the Coop cash registers went on strike. There were also problems with payments made with Twint.

The problem was resolved late Thursday evening. However, failure is not without consequences for Coop. After all, not everyone has cash in their pocket these days. Especially at train stations, long waiting times were experienced at the end of working hours because the automatic cash registers were not working.

Do you now buy your private stores from Migros, Mr. Wyss?

“The failure of the payment system yesterday clearly had an impact on sales – but we do not want to quantify this in detail,” Coop spokesman Caspar Frey said when asked by Blick.

It is unclear where the error occurred

The crash was caused by a technical malfunction affecting the network connection to a payment service provider. “Our IT team worked hard on a solution and were able to resolve the issue last night,” Frey said. Now it’s time to find out exactly where the error occurred; At Coop or at payment service provider Worldline?

All Coop branches in Switzerland were affected by the outage, except for Coop Pronto stores and payments on the Coop.ch online marketplace. “But the rejection rate varied depending on the payment method and time period,” Frey explains.

Despite the stress of the end of the workday, customers reacted in a friendly manner and were understanding towards employees. Many people probably went shopping for the competition: For example, everything worked perfectly at Migros yesterday, as seen by a check at the Sechseläutenplatz branch in Zurich.
