Lack of snow and mild temperatures: First ski camps now have to be cancelled!

Long ski briefs are the least needed item this year: in the midst of sports holidays, temperatures regularly soar into the double-digit range, even in winter sports regions! For example, Lower St. Temperatures of 13 degrees are expected for the weekend in Johann SG and Wildhaus SG. The towns in Toggenburg are the starting point for ski holidays Chäserrugg (2260 m) and Gamserrugg (2076 m). Due to its relatively low location, the region is famous for its salty slopes.

Blick knows: A few days ago a ski camp in the area was canceled due to unstable snow conditions! Two school classes from Frauenfeld TG returned home earlier than planned. The winter sports camp run by the disabled sports association PluSport remained in Toggenburg, but there was no skiing in the second half of the camp. Some children have difficulty walking and travel the slopes on a monoski bobsled; Handling heavy and wet spring snow with these vehicles is much more difficult than other winter sports enthusiasts due to their weight.

“We would have liked a little more snow on the left and right of the pistes,” admits Bergbahnen Wildhaus marketing manager Marc-Andrea Barandun. But he also emphasizes this: “The slopes are open all the way to the valley!” This week alone there are eight ski camps in the area with 400 children. There is no feeling of shyness among the organizers of the ski camps.

Grisons instead of Toggenburg

However, this is not always completely optional: For example, primary schools Rikon and Zell in the Winterthur ZH district also go to the ski camp in Wildhaus at the end of the month. Camp director Gian Pozzy asked rhetorically: “Have you ever tried to find a warehouse for 50 participants during a sports holiday week?” he asks. “Not having snow is a small problem.”

The sports office of the Canton of Zurich confirmed that, upon request, camps were deliberately moved to higher altitudes, for example to the Graubsunu ski resorts of Davos, Arosa, Lenzerheide or Laax. At higher altitudes, conditions remain good thanks to the amount of snow that falls in December, despite spring-like temperatures in the valley.

Mini golf instead of winter sports

Participants also brave the heat: Winter sports camps are extremely popular. In most cases, demolition is not an option, regardless of storage location and snow conditions. Many organizers have an alternative schedule in their drawer: walking, visits to the indoor swimming pool, curling, ice skating and mini golf.

There’s even a good chance these alternatives won’t be used: cooler temperatures are expected next week and even some fresh snow is expected in some places.
