On the other hand, according to calculations made by the Commission, there are significant health and environmental benefits. Over a 25-year period, these are estimated to amount to 55.8 billion and even 133.6 billion Euros and are mainly explained by reductions in harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions.
By contrast, total regulatory-related costs for auto and light commercial vehicle manufacturers will amount to only around 35.5 billion euros and 17.5 billion euros for trucks and buses during this period.
After preliminary planning, the responsible EU Commission plans to submit its proposal for the new emissions standard on 9 November. In particular, it should also take into account new vehicle technologies and ensure that emissions are measured in real time.
According to information from the EU Commission, the exact level of future emission limit values is still under discussion. However, according to a draft regulation, old limit values of the Euro 6 standard are also acceptable, at least for petrol cars. Such an approach would take into account that conventional combustion engines should no longer be sold from 2035. Manufacturers can thus avoid high investment in new emission reduction systems.
