Two Boeing 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019 resulted in 346 deaths. The main cause of the two accidents was a faulty control program. Five years later, the same type of aircraft is making headlines again. One fault followed another in January. We offer an overview.

The biggest incident happened at the beginning of January. On an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland (USA) to Ontario (USA), the plane in position 26 loses the emergency door at an altitude of 5,000 meters. 30 minutes after takeoff, the pilot had to make another emergency landing in Portland.

Miraculously, no one was seriously injured. The two seats next to the door are not occupied. Some of the 177 passengers lost their mobile phones and one child even lost his shirt. Shortly thereafter, a teacher found a 27-kilogram piece of the crashed plane’s fuselage in his yard in Portland.

Following the emergency landing, US aviation regulator FAA issued a no-fly order for the affected Boeing 737 MAX 9. Emergency checks are required for 170 airmen. This takes four to eight hours per plane. Europe embraces the ban.

A day later, US airline United Airlines reported that they had found loose screws in the same fuselage component that had broken a few days earlier. Affected Alaska airlines also reported that other parts were not screwed on properly.

It was later learned that the FAA had launched an investigation against the company. The circumstances suggest that the aircraft manufacturer may have neglected its manufacturing, inspection and testing obligations.

When the first turmoil takes over the missing part of the fuselage, the next excitement quickly follows. A wheel falls off on a Delta Airlines plane shortly before takeoff. The machine had already received take-off clearance. But it is a different type of Boeing.

What’s explosive is that the pilot didn’t notice anything about the incident. The pilot only learns this when another aircraft detects the wheel rolling.

Other deficiencies in the Boeing 737 series will come to light in the next two weeks. However, immediate flight safety is not in danger. However, airlines need to inspect 505 more aircraft. Boeing also finds 50 planes with faulty parts in its factories.

The first findings are known a month after the near miss. It is said that the four key bolts that were supposed to lock the door were missing from the fallen part of the body. The investigating authority may also clarify that Boeing technicians were responsible.

What’s next?

Boeing suffers greatly from the consequences. United Airlines announced that it will remove a long-held order for 150 737 Max aircraft from its fleet planning. Additionally, Boeing is not currently allowed to produce disaster-type aircraft. The share price has been on a downward trend since the beginning of the year but has stabilized again in the last few days.

The FAA also drew conclusions. Boeing factories are constantly monitored by two dozen inspectors.
