Boeing announced Thursday that more than 1,400 machines in global operations have been inspected since the end of last year and found to be in working order. Only the investigation is still ongoing.
The US Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday officially ordered an inspection of fittings on the 737 Max plane. However, Boeing’s announcement indicates that this is an official step after all. Machines that have already been tested do not need to be re-inspected. Boeing also found an insufficiently tightened nut on an aircraft on the production line, according to the FAA. The agency emphasized that the mother’s absence may affect the functionality of the aircraft under certain circumstances.
Quality checks and fasteners have been a major problem for Boeing since part of the fuselage of a new 737-9 Max nearly disintegrated in flight in early January. More than 170 people on board fled in terror. By a lucky coincidence, the two seats right next to the hole in the cabin wall remained empty. The US investigative agency NTSB concluded this week that four fixing bolts were missing from the fuselage piece. (SDA)
