Like the chocolate, it was a part of her: the red lipstick of the Swiss female flight attendants.

Women in the obligatory tights and bright red lipstick, men without nail polish. Once upon a time it was! Switzerland regulates clothing, hairstyle, jewelry and make-up requirements. Previous regulations have long caused headaches for the Kapers cabin crew union. I was told that the rules are no longer up to date.

New uniform and style rules are needed to ensure greater equality and inclusion. The Lufthansa subsidiary responded to criticism and relaxed hairstyle rules in 2021. Switzerland is now readjusting its guidelines, Kapers’ spokesman Steve Broghammer confirmed to the Aargauer Zeitung.

What is allowed now?

Lufthansa’s subsidiary did not respond to all requests. Still, Broghammer suggests it’s “a big step in the right direction.” The Swiss plane’s crew has a few innovations to look forward to.

Perhaps most notable was the elimination of the lipstick requirement for female flight attendants. Likewise, when wearing a uniform skirt, the same goes for socks. Opaque and medical tights, as well as combinations with lace-up shoes, are now allowed.

wig and piercing

Flight attendants no longer have to shave their legs. Women are also allowed to wear ties. In contrast, everyone, not just women, is now allowed to wear make-up; whether with make-up, lipstick or nail polish. The Swiss are also more relaxed about tattoos. Body painting is allowed with certain restrictions. It should not be placed on the face or hands and should not display any distracting objects.

The airline also allows piercings and dental jewelry under the new rules. And: Flight attendants can now follow their passions with more unusual hairstyles. Wigs are also allowed for non-medical reasons. Twists and cornrows, also known as Rasta, are also accepted depending on the style.

The new regulations aim to reduce criticism of sexism as well as simplify the search for personnel. The airline is urgently looking for new employees. (wgr)
