The new president of Hotelleriesuisse, Martin von Moos (60), is following in big footsteps. Andreas Züllig (65), his predecessor at the umbrella organization of the hotel industry, describes the country’s best host as a good choice with the political instincts necessary for the successful management of the association.

But as the non-partisan von Moos admitted in an interview with Blick, he “definitely still needs to do some work” on his “political network” for lobbying in Bern. Like Züllig, he has spent almost his entire professional life in the hotel industry. “Except for the fact that he got an internship at Radio Pilatus after graduating from high school in Immensee SZ,” he says with a smile.

But lobbying at the national level is new territory for the Lucerne resident. He had already established a small network during the Corona period. At the time, as head of Zurich’s hotel industry, he had to scramble to secure relief funds for the beleaguered industry. In his new position, he says he now wants to intensify discussions with Hotelleriesuisse’s partners and regional associations, as well as politicians.

At the meeting at the four-star Belvoir hotel in Rüschlikon ZH, which he manages as general manager together with the nearby sister hotel Sedartis in Thalwil ZH, von Moos also proves to be a “good listener”.

Clearly positioned but non-partisan

Moos is at his best when it comes to lobbying concerns. Taking clear positions is important for him. He advocates the development of “tourism zones” in cities. Von Moos says stores in busy tourist areas of major cities should remain open on Sundays. “We know of Arab guests who travel from Zurich to Milan to shop on Sundays,” he says, and gets angry: “This can’t be true!” He knows that liberalizing opening hours is a political hot potato.

For him, it is also clear: “There must be equal conditions in vocational education.” Nationally, the teachings prevalent in the hotel industry are at a disadvantage compared to university or technical college education. “If a South African graduates from hotel management school in Switzerland, they are not allowed to work here afterwards. “University graduates can get exemption more easily.” This increases the shortage of qualified personnel.

In the canton of Zurich, von Moos is campaigning for runway expansions at Kloten Airport, which is “important for Switzerland as a tourist location”.

Hotelier and family man

In his private life, his heart beats for the center of Switzerland. His residence in Merlischachen SZ is close to his home in Lucerne, where he also heads the men’s shooting society. A true family man, he enjoys skiing and cross-country skiing with his wife and three soon-to-be grown sons. In the summer months he does water sports or plays golf at Lake Lucerne. The heart of football beats for FC Luzern.

For the first time, a female director became

It’s not just the President of Hotelleriesuisse who is new: on January 30, Nicole Brändle (44) became new and first! – Elected director of Hotelleriesuisse. He will take office on April 1 and will replace Claude Meier, 45, who left the industry association voluntarily after eight years. Brändle studied economics in Zurich. The economist has been working at Hotelleriesuisse as head of business, education and policy since 2019. She previously worked at the economic development department of the city of Zurich, former major bank Credit Suisse and the Swiss National Bank.

Don’t do homeland security

The graduate of the Lausanne School of Hotel Management explains his goal as President of Hotelleriesuisse, for which he has been elected for the next three years: “To ensure the profitability and future viability of the Swiss hotel industry.” It hosts foreign investors such as Samih Sawiris (67), who invested in Andermatt UR and Crans-Montana VS, and Americans from Vail Resorts. Von Moos: “If someone invests, that’s a good thing.” Homeland security is misplaced at all costs; In fact, he welcomes the tremendous improvement seen in Andermatt, where he was doing his military service at the time. But he does not accept that hotel visionaries are few and far between in Switzerland.

You can tell from Moos: He’s trying to stay in the centre. He describes himself as “neither a city nor a country bumpkin” and describes his leadership style as “participatory, on an equal footing with the people.”

Downplays dispute with Gastrosuisse – Hotelleriesuisse wants a new, contemporary national collective bargaining agreement, but the catering association opposes it: “We work closely together in many areas and I have a good relationship with outgoing President Casimir Platzer, but some disagree on this .”

Von Moos leaves open diplomatically whether he will use the full nine years he is allowed to run at Hoteleriesuisse. When it comes to hotel topics, it is desirable that it has a few rough edges so that it does not shine. Because political lobbying is a difficult field.
