“Control via mobile phone or computer”: Elon Musk’s brain implants will one day make even healthy people more productive

Will we soon turn into cyborgs of our own free will? Elon Musk, a pioneering technology billionaire in his field, says brain implants should not only help against neurological diseases but also make healthy people more productive.

Neuralink, the start-up company owned by technology billionaire Elon Musk (52), has placed a brain implant in a patient for the first time since its establishment. “The first person received a Neuralink implant yesterday and is doing well,” Musk said in a statement on Monday.

As Musk wrote on text message service X, initial results on neuronal activity are “promising.”

Not only against neurological diseases

Founded in 2016, the company received approval from US authorities last year to test implants in the human brain. Implants are about the size of five coins stacked on top of each other.

These devices, which aim to help people with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also aim to establish a direct connection between the brain and computers and artificial intelligence, thus increasing human capabilities.

Will cyborgs become reality?

“It allows you to control your mobile phone or computer and almost any device just by thinking,” Musk wrote on X on Monday. “The first users will be those who can no longer move their limbs.”

Neuralink isn’t the only company working on brain-computer interfaces. In July 2022, Australia-based competitor Synchron announced that it was the first company to implant the corresponding chip into the brain of a US patient. (cut/SDA)
