Instead of a dignified burial, a bargain was made: A funeral home in Spain illegally sold the bodies of the dead to university institutes for research purposes, according to police. Funeral home workers in Valencia, eastern Spain, forged documents to collect bodies from hospitals and homeless shelters and then sold them to university institutes for 1,200 euros per body, police said on Monday. Two owners and two employees of the funeral home are charged.
Police said the four suspects sold at least eleven bodies. They also took on the task of disposing of corpses or body parts after investigative work was completed. The institute sometimes billed for cremations that never took place. A university received a bill of 5,040 euros for the cremation of 11 bodies that were not found in any crematorium in the city.
According to investigators, the suspects chose people without living relatives, “preferably foreigners”, for their illegal work. In another case, an elderly man with limited mental abilities was persuaded to agree to donate his body for research purposes.
The investigation into the incident started at the beginning of last year. The defendants face charges of fraud and forgery of documents. (AFP)
