The deadline is February 1 – next Thursday: all drivers using the motorway must present a new vignette. You don’t need to stick them to the windshield for the first time; You can also solve them online. This is electronically linked to the plate. The new proposal seems to be well received by the public.
As the Federal Agency for Customs and Border Protection (BAZG) reported at Blick’s request, more than 1.6 million e-stickers have been sold since the beginning of December. The registration process, which was deliberately kept simple, went smoothly for the vast majority of transactions.
“We expect 40 to 50 percent of vignette buyers will choose e-vignette in 2024,” says BAZG media spokesperson David Venetz. In total, approximately 10.5 million vignettes have been sold in recent years.
Venetz expects demand to pick up again in the next few days. On December 1, the rush was so great that there were delays in the start of sales.
While BAZG is responsible for traffic control at the borders, police are on duty within the country. “If a driver does not have a sticker vignette on their car, that license plate is compared to the registered license plate database using a mobile app,” explains Venetz. There is no additional effort involved. This was also confirmed by the cantonal police of Zurich, Bern and Basel-Stadt upon Blick’s question.
As long as both physical and electronic vignettes need to be checked, so-called license plate scanners will not be an option. According to BAZG, this will not be effective. Police in the canton of Bern confirmed that such scanners are not planned for the future.
Under the National Road Tax Act, the sticker vignette must be offered until the rate drops below 10 per cent of all vignettes. Only then should the adhesive vignette be removed. “We will see how the share of sticker vignettes and e-vignette develops,” says Venetz.
The e-sticker is particularly attractive to drivers with a change number; because it is linked to the vehicle number and not to the vehicle as before. The e-vignette is also useful if you purchase a new vehicle during the year. And who hasn’t had enough of the hassle of scraping off the old sticker label? By the way, this is green for 2024.
The selling price for both the e-vignette and the sticker vignette remained unchanged at 40 francs. At least if you purchase the e-vignette through the official BAZG portal. Other providers sometimes charge more. Just enter the vehicle type, registered country and valid license plate in the form.
However, it is not possible to replace the adhesive vignette with an e-vignette. Anyone caught without a vignet on the highway must pay 200 francs.
