Surfing above the clouds: Switzerland brings Internet to its short-haul fleet

What was previously valid for long-haul customers will now also apply to Switzerland’s entire short-haul fleet: free internet for chat services. According to the statement made by the Lufthansa subsidiary, a total of 59 Airbus A220 and Airbus A320 aircraft will be gradually equipped with broadband internet access starting from the winter of 2024/25.

Swiss: “In the future, our short-haul passengers will also benefit from free internet for chat services on European flights and attractive offers for extended functions such as email, web browsing and social media.”

It has been used on long-distance routes since 2016

Swiss has successfully equipped its long-distance fleet with broadband internet since 2016.

Chat and messaging services such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are free to use. According to Swiss, passengers will be able to send and receive unlimited text and picture messages for free throughout the flight. Paid: Browsing websites and using email programs or social media platforms, as well as streaming and VPN services. These can be purchased on request.

Internet connection must be reliable

Heike Birlenbach, Commercial Director for Switzerland: “We recognize that it is important for our passengers to connect both privately and professionally while on the move, so they can exchange ideas, read emails or keep up to date with current events. Therefore, we are very happy that we will be able to meet this need in our future shorter flights.”

And how it all works: The Internet is based on a new, hybrid technology called EAN (European Aviation Network). It combines satellite connectivity with ground-based wireless technology and aims to provide a reliable broadband Internet connection. (euro)
