In 2023, letter mail decreased by 5.6 percent compared to the previous year. Letter volume has dropped nearly 40 percent over the past 20 years, according to the postal service.

On the other hand, Swiss Post customers sent nearly 70 percent more packages than they did a decade ago. Due to this long-term trend, Swiss Post continues to expect noticeable growth in the parcel market.

In 2023, Swiss Post employees processed 185 million packages. This was 4.7 percent less than the previous year. However, compared to 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated “shipping boom”), the postal service carried 24 percent more packages. This corresponded to an increase of 35 million packages.

The postal service said declining package volumes through 2023 are a result of overall inflation, continued clouded consumer confidence and the geopolitical situation. Despite this decline, parcel volumes remain high.
