Cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, psychedelic mushrooms and especially ketamine — eccentric Elon Musk’s drug list has grown significantly, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. He is said to have gone on an LSD trip in Los Angeles in 2018; In Mexico it was magic mushrooms, and in Miami it was ketamine, a drug with hallucinogenic side effects and used for severe depression and even to numb horses.

Musk’s drug trafficking has reached enormous proportions; Reminds me of “The Wolf of Wall Street” Jordan Belfort. In the 1980s and 1990s, the stockbroker ingested 22 different substances at the same time. This raises the question: Why? So what does drug consumption look like in this country?

The Swiss consume it for two reasons

Addiction doctor and psychiatrist Thilo Beck of the Arud Center for Addiction Medicine in Zurich offers a simple answer: “Managers are stressed.” There are two different ways drugs are used to cope with stress: A person uses them to relieve stress. Others take it as a stimulant and to improve performance.

“The first group relaxes with alcohol or benzodiazepines,” Beck explains. The short form, “benzos,” includes sleeping pills and tranquilizers. Benzos, like alcohol, have an anti-anxiety and calming effect and allow leaders to shut down.

The second group uses drugs to increase performance. Cocaine is especially common in Switzerland. The performance-enhancing effects of LSD, ecstasy and ketamine when used in low doses are controversial. “All of these drugs act like psychedelics. They make it possible to look at a situation from the outside and question it.”

The rapidly digitalizing world increases stress

Nowadays, managers are under constant stress. Digitalization constantly brings new tools, constant availability no longer allows for breaks, and working from home makes it impossible to stop working in the living room.

Consumption in this country has increased accordingly; but not as severe as expected. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, cannabis is the drug most consumed by Swiss people. In 1997, just under 20 percent said they had consumed marijuana at least once in their lives; 20 years later, this figure had risen to over 30 percent.

Marijuana is followed by white snow and cocaine. Here, 6.7 percent of the Swiss population has already tried cocaine. This is 4 percentage points higher than 20 years ago.

The numbers show this: Swiss people are also turning to drugs. Not as tough as American business stars, not as frequent as multi-billionaires.
