The grand parade of the powerful and rich begins on Monday at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR. With the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45), WEF organizers staged a coup. This year, Selenski is personally traveling to the Graubundan mountains. He did so after addressing the world elite gathered via video link in previous years. Its purpose is the same: to provide support to Ukraine. Last year, his wife, Olena Selenska (45), appeared in Davos, accompanied by high security measures and great secrecy so as not to endanger the Ukrainian delegation.

For Zelensky, this is the first visit to Switzerland since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression. But this is not the first visit: he had already taken part in the WEF in 2020 – but before the start of the war. Selenski visited the Federal Council in Bern before the WEF.

High-profile people from China, undersized US delegation

In addition to Zelensky, nearly 60 heads of state are also going to the World Economic Forum in Davos. This is a new record: In last year’s edition, 52 heads of state and government accepted the invitation of WEF founder Klaus Schwab (85). This year’s guests of the top political league include the newly elected Argentinian President Javier Milei (53). He has only been in office since mid-December and has made a name for himself with his ultra-liberal economic policy and sensational appearances (for example, with a chainsaw in the election campaign).

Chinese Premier Li Qiang (64) is also on the guest list, as predicted. China is traveling with its highest-level delegation since 2017, when Chinese President Xi Jinping (70) attended the WEF.

The US delegation, meanwhile, is less star-studded: organizers confirmed the participation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken (61) and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan (47). However, neither US President Joe Biden (81) nor Vice President Kamala Harris (59) is coming to the Grisons mountains.

The conflict in the Middle East caused chaos

The visit of heads of state and government from the Middle East is eagerly awaited: Israeli President Isaac Herzog (63), Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati (68), Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shyaa Al Sudani (54), Jordanian Prime Minister So far Hani Al Khasawneh (54) and Iran Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (59) attended.

The list of heads of state from Europe is also impressive; especially French President Emmanuel Macron (46) and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (65). However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65) is not on the participant list. Federal President Viola Amherd (61) heads the WEF delegation to Switzerland.

ChatGPT inventor Sam Altman is there

Along with political executives, business elites are also strongly represented at the WEF: According to the organisers, more than 800 CEOs from all sectors of the economy are participating in this year’s event. According to the program, Sam Altman (38), the inventor of ChatGPT, will also take part in a panel. In total, WEF expects 2,800 participants from 120 countries.

The theme of WEF this year is “Rebuilding Trust”. The forum will discuss geopolitical challenges related to the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, among other topics. The focus is also on artificial intelligence and the expected upheavals it will bring to the labor market. Climate protection and gender equality, as in previous years. WEF will start on Monday, January 15 and continue until Friday, January 19.
