The popularity of the A320 family of short-range aircraft and the long-range A350 aircraft contributed to the success. The company also said it delivered 735 aircraft to customers last year despite ongoing supply chain issues. Thus, Airbus exceeded its target of 720 aircraft delivered, a significantly higher figure than 661 aircraft in 2022.

After the pandemic, “We expected aviation to recover between 2023-2025, but in 2023, we saw that the wide-body aircraft market, as well as the single-aisle aircraft market, recovered much earlier and stronger than expected. is back,” explained Christian Scherer, general manager of the commercial aircraft division, according to a press release.

The largest order came from Indian low-cost airline IndiGo, which signed the largest order in civil aviation history with 500 A320s. Air India ordered 250 aircraft, including 40 A350s, and Turkish Airlines ordered 230 aircraft, including 60 A350s. «We have never sold so many A320s or A350s in one year. (…) There is a strong dynamic,” Scherer said.

According to Scherer, Airbus wants to increase the number of A320s produced monthly from 48 to 75 in 2023 and the number of A350s produced monthly from 5 to 10 in 2026 in order to meet high demand.

While Airbus is flying high, US rival Boeing is stumbling: The company also recorded a surge in orders, with 1,456 orders; this can be attributed to the success of the 737 MAX (987 orders) and the long-haul airliner 787 (313 orders). . However, Boeing continues to struggle with production and quality control issues and has only been able to deliver 528 aircraft in 2023.

Last week, a Boeing 737 MAX belonging to Alaska Airlines had to make an emergency landing due to a fuselage part breaking off. No one was injured in the incident, but the image of the US manufacturer continues to be damaged after a total of 346 people died in two accidents that occurred due to design defects in 2018 and 2019.
