The Saint-Maurice Abbey brewery has been producing various types of beer since 2019.

It’s a good idea: Coop bans the monastery beer of the Saint-Maurice Valais Monastery from being on the shelves. Because the monastery has been linked to the revelations of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

As research by RTS shows, the St-Maurice Abbaye brewery is clearly feeling the effects of the scandal. Coop is not alone in his decision. Vaud company Amstein SA, the main partner of the brewery, also returned its stocks.

President Pierre-Alain Cardinaux holds no grudges against the cooperative: “It is clear that a wholesaler like Coop must have a perfect supplier. “The monastery has been criticized in the media and I completely understand this decision,” he says. But he doesn’t understand why these aspects are associated with the marketing of beer.

Only available in Valais and Vaud

Coop pulled its abbey beer from shelves in November. Cases of abuse emerged in September. Coop confirmed RTS’ investigation to CH-Media. The retailer sold the monastery beer only at a few outlets in the cantons of Vaud and Valais. There have been isolated negative feedback from customers.

But it wasn’t fear of disaster that drove Coop to this decision: “We had independently recorded a decline in demand before the media coverage,” said a spokesman for the co-op.

Time will tell whether the brewery can continue this way: The monastery initially wanted to produce 600,000 bottles a year. He’s far from that. It has sold 150,000 bottles per year since its founding in 2019; In 2023, it was less than half of this figure. (kae)
