Eyes and ears around the world are turning to Davos GR: When powerful figures from politics and business head to the World Economic Forum (WEF) next week, an army of media professionals will be ready to broadcast to the world every sentence they say to mark it. After the WEF unveiled its celebrity guest list on Tuesday, organizers have now announced the programme. Blick offers some of the highlights.
High-profile guests will arrive on Monday, the first events will take place, but the forum will not officially open until Tuesday. WEF founder Klaus Schwab (85) will take the stage at 10.30 in the large planning hall of the convention center together with Federal President Viola Amherd (61). It has a capacity of 1,800 spectators. Thousands more watched via livestream.
Ukraine’s president will have 45 minutes to address the world at the WEF on Tuesday. Selenski had spoken to WEF attendees via video link in previous years. Even then, his speeches triggered minutes of applause and a standing ovation in the hall. For this reason, his live performance is awaited with even more excitement.
There are rumors that Selenski will go to Bern on Monday before his WEF visit. The program would certainly work, with Selenski taking to the stage in Davos on Tuesday afternoon.
Argentina’s newly elected President, Javier Milei (53), is known for his laconic looks. At the WEF, unlike during the election campaign, he is not allowed on stage with a chainsaw; The only thing preventing this is the metal detectors at all entrances to the convention center. Still, Milei’s speech is likely to cause a stir. The ultra-libertarian politician and trained economist has been disrupting Argentina’s economy since taking office a month ago. Ideas such as using the US dollar as a reserve currency at the WEF or abolishing the central bank will raise the eyebrows of many forum participants.
It is clear that Milei has not yet reached the top league of political and economic heavyweights: unlike Selensky and Macron, he is not given three-quarters of an hour to speak, but only 30 minutes.
After the enfant terrible from Latin America, European heads of state pressed the button in the plenary hall of the Davos Convention Center. At 16.45, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (51) is the first to appear on stage. French President Emmanuel Macron (46) came right after him. The WEF is concerned, among other things, with the security of Europe in terms of the war in Ukraine. That is why the appearances of European heads of state are particularly interesting.
He’s not a head of state, but he’s something of a pop star in the tech industry: Sam Altman, 38, is the developer of the artificial intelligence ChatGPT. He will not be speaking at the WEF, but will be part of a panel discussion on “Technology in a Turbulent World.” Along with Altman, the podium includes Albert Bourla (62), CEO of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt (57) and Julie Sweet (56), CEO of the consulting firm Accenture.
