Regular customers at the gym are inconvenienced: There are currently queues in front of the machines, cloakrooms are overcrowded and group fitness courses are booked up quickly. New Year’s resolutions are making their presence felt. “We have two to three times more people than usual in January,” confirms Mory Kondé (44), manager of Activ Fitness in Zurich-Oerlikon.

Goodwill is a very important economic factor for the industry. One in six adults in Switzerland has a fitness subscription. This corresponds to 1.16 million people. It is important for the survival of the industry that many now have new motivation to expand their membership. And it is also economically important. All in all, around 27,000 people work in the industry, according to industry association Swiss Active. You’re having a particularly hard time introducing newbies to devices these days and handling the paperwork for many new memberships.

Update Fitness, the fitness studio chain owned by Coop, is using the increased New Year’s motivation to win customers: Anyone who completes their annual subscription in January can get a free first-month workout. Payment only starts in February; Even though most people have long thrown away their good intentions, paid membership continues.

Sporting goods retailers also make good decisions at the beginning of the year. “In addition to fitness and yoga clothing, the running sector is also in greater demand,” writes Migros subsidiary SportX. “Sales of large fitness equipment and items such as dumbbells, yoga mats and massage guns for home fitness are increasing.”

Digitec Galaxus, Switzerland’s largest online retailer, a subsidiary of Migros, recorded a 12 percent increase in sportswear in the first week of January.

New Year’s resolutions are on the fridge

Besides exercise, “Veganer” and “Dry January” are also becoming increasingly popular: People decide at the beginning of the year to eat vegan or go alcohol-free for a month. This is noticeable in supermarket sales.

Retailers also confirm that non-alcoholic beer, vegan burger patties and oat milk are in particular demand right now.

Many have already proactively jumped on the bandwagon and introduced additional vegan or alcohol-free products in January. Discount store Lidl, for example, is temporarily adding 40 additional vegan and vegetarian products to its range in January, as stated upon request.

Most disappear from the shelves after a few weeks and people switch from the vegan sausage alternative back to the Lyoner sausage alternative. At least the general public. Some people stick to their resolutions and often incorporate vegetarian, vegan and non-alcoholic alternatives into their menu plans in the coming months.

Swiss Active President Reto Conrad (57) hopes they will stay loyal to the sport. Research conducted by the association shows that the frequency of training has generally increased. “This shows that new athletes don’t throw away their resolution so quickly, but stick with it during training.”
