During inspections of its 737 Max 9 aircraft, US airline United Airlines found loose screws in a fuselage component that had broken off during a flight a few days ago. A United spokesman did not say how many planes had problems Monday. The airline has a total of 79 aircraft of this type. The US aviation authority, the FAA, ordered the planes to be grounded and inspected over the weekend.
In the model variant, the component covers a door opening that is not required. On an Alaska Airlines flight on Friday, the piece suddenly broke off while climbing shortly after takeoff. The 171 passengers fled largely in terror. According to experts, this was also due to a serendipitous event: At this stage of the flight, no one was sitting directly next to the exploding fragment, and all passengers were still wearing their seat belts.
According to local authority EASA, no aircraft in the European Union will be affected by the decommissioning and inspections. (SDA)
