London to New York in under 90 minutes. US aviation and space agency NASA is working on a new passenger jet. It needs to break all records by reaching a top speed of almost 5000 km/h.
Supersonic commercial aviation has been halted since the Concorde disaster in 2000. The new X-59 QueSSt will now significantly outperform the famous Concorde (2179 km/h). NASA announced that the plane will be introduced next Friday.
The space agency wants to drastically shorten travel times with its new passenger jet. However, there are not only technical but also legal problems. Supersonic flights are not allowed in many countries. The reason for this is the explosion that occurs when the sound barrier is exceeded.
That’s why researchers have been working on technologies to reduce noise for decades. Lockheed Martin’s plane should no longer create sonic booms. Basically, this sound can be heard at a speed of approximately 1200 km/h. X-59 only needs to do a “supersonic breath”.
In addition to NASA and Lockheed Martin, other companies are also conducting research on the development of supersonic passenger aircraft. It is said that the jet named Overture by the US company Boom is faster and more efficient than the old Concorde.
It is currently completely unclear when such a jet will take off for the first time and how much such a flight will cost. But it will definitely take a few more years. (wgr)
