As part of Germany’s traffic light government’s comprehensive climate policy, many fireplace owners are now faced with the question of whether they want to make an expensive upgrade to their open fireplaces in their living spaces or should they switch them off.

Fireplaces are considered major climate sinners. “Bild” says, “Change, transform or close down”; many fireplace owners now face this choice.

From the end of the year, all fireplaces in living spaces must comply with strict new limit values stipulated by the Immission Control Act with the unpronounceable abbreviation “BImSchV”.

There is no easy solution

The limit applies to systems installed since 2015. However, the majority of systems are older. Older furnaces can be expensive for owners. They either replace the stove, renew the dust separator, or turn off the stove completely.

An active filter can be particularly costly. Requires power connection. But the filter cassettes of passive dust collectors also need to be replaced regularly and will hurt your wallet over the years.

Standards are also stricter in Switzerland

Even in Switzerland, the cozy crackling of the fireplace during the cold winter months is no longer considered completely harmless. Since May 2018, stricter emissions limits have been in place for smaller wood-burning stoves.

Advert

“Fireplaces and stoves with an annual wood consumption of more than one cubic meter are considered regularly operated systems,” the Federal Environment Agency (FOEN) writes on its website. “The Clean Air Directive requires a visual inspection by a chimney sweep every two years.”
