Snow is guaranteed at the Glacier 3000 ski area, 3,000 meters above sea level. Only one of the nine tracks requires artificial snow.
However, weather conditions cause problems in the ski area between the cantons of Bern and Vaud. Because it is cold down to minus 15 degrees. On Sunday, winds will blow from the slopes at speeds of up to 129 kilometers per hour. But ski and chair lifts do not do this. “Due to wind and limited visibility, we had to close the entire ski area today. “Also, the cable cars above 2,000 meters are completely iced over,” says Glacier 3000 CEO Bernhard Tschannen (46).
Today, there is no road to the summit not only for skiers and snowboarders, but also for pedestrians. Mountain restaurants are closed for security reasons. “Employees are off today,” Tschannen continued.
Due to weather conditions, employees have to make intense efforts. “Our technicians are under particular pressure this season because the ski lifts have suffered so much damage due to icing,” says Tschannen. The weather has been very bad since mid-October. Iced steel cables, tons of ice and meters of snow on the cable car roofs: “We are not used to this scale. “It’s a very stressful situation for the team.”
At least there are alternative options for visitors. The multi-day ticket is also valid for the neighboring ski areas Gstaad BE and Les Diabelerets VD. In Gstaad just over half of the slopes are accessible, and in Les Diabelerets almost all the ski lifts are open.
If you have a day ticket for Glacier 3000, you can refund it or rebook for another day. Glacier 3000 will be open to pedestrians again starting Monday, and to skiers and snowboarders starting Tuesday. “There are great conditions here thanks to the fresh snow,” says Tschannen. When the wind dies down, the snow fun ends. The ski area has a long season ahead until the end of April.
Things initially looked bleak in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Flims-Laax-Falera GR ski area. At 8 a.m., only six of 28 elevators were open. But the weather quickly improved and the elevators opened en masse. “Strong winds and snowfall were already expected for today. However, it was possible to offer a wide range of offers throughout the day,” said a spokesperson from Laax. The atmosphere is positive and operators are happy with the season so far. Although the cable car does not always open on time.
The general outlook for the ski areas on Sunday paints a positive picture. In large ski areas, lifts and slopes are mostly open. In Zermatt VS you cannot go to the Italian side due to weather conditions. Low-lying ski areas have also had to struggle with a lack of snow. However, this must change now; because snow is expected.
