Bad news for Swisscom web hosting customers: they will have to look for a new provider by the end of May.
Jean Claude RaemyEconomics Editor

An estimated 20,000 Swisscom web hosting customers recently received a unilateral notice of termination effective from the end of May 2024. You will then need to look for a new provider. This sometimes requires a lot of effort.

Web hosting is the provision of storage space for websites on an Internet service provider’s web server.

Swisscom, previously one of Switzerland’s largest web hosting providers, will give up this core business in June 2024. The offer cannot be operated profitably, a company spokesman told the “Tages-Anzeiger” newspaper.

Complex provider change

Swisscom is offering those affected the opportunity to switch to subsidiaries – these are called Localsearch, MTF Solutions or Global IP Action – and will now take over Swisscom’s web hosting. From a customer perspective, switching to these companies requires minimal effort.

The ugly: Global Intellectual Property Action charges 9.50 francs per customer for data cleaning in transit to the company.

These additional costs cause dissatisfaction among those affected. “Swisscom shifts customers from one pocket to another and charges for it,” says the owner of a small business in Zurich, whose name was not disclosed. He also finds the additional effort made despite the tax incomprehensible. The customer must switch to the new provider through a multi-step process, “including hours of waiting on the Swisscom phone line.”

Advert

Swisscom admits that switching to competitors requires more effort. Websites created with Swisscom’s own software may not be compatible with the new provider’s web hosting environment. In the worst case, a client who wants to change will need to recreate or adapt their content.
