Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGBahn), which runs regional services from Zermatt via Visp and Brig in Valais to Andermatt in the canton of Uri, carried 7.72 million passengers in its first eleven months, BVZ Group announced on Monday. This corresponds to an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the period January to November 2022.

It was said that this meant MGBahn was heading towards an all-time high. BVZ will announce the final figures for regional passenger transportation for 2023 in mid-January.

Trips to Zermatt’s Gornergrat sightseeing spot were also heavily booked last year. It was stated that GGB will carry more guests on its 2023 anniversary than ever before in its history. This means an increase of 27 percent compared to the previous year.

According to the information obtained, GGB recorded strong growth, especially with guests from North America. According to the statement, demand from Germany, England and France, as well as Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries, was as strong as ever. The railway company celebrated its 125th anniversary.

The Glacier Express, which operates between Zermatt and St. Moritz, also experienced a tourism boom. In terms of the number of guests, this exceeds the pre-corona pandemic level and once again proves the value of the luxury offering of the Excellence Class, BVZ wrote. 20 places per trip have been fully booked for weeks.

“Whether in Zermatt with the Matterhorn, in Mattertal and Goms, in the Urserntal around the tourist destination Andermatt, or in Surselva – everywhere we have been able to host more guests than ever before,” BVZ CEO Fernando Lehner said in a statement. . .

Lehner believes the high guest count will also be reflected in business results: “Based on everything we’ve seen today, I’m assuming we’ll hit 2019’s record results, if not beat them,” he said.
