Smokeless sticks instead of cigarettes: Philip Morris builds production facility for 13 million francs

Smoke-free products are becoming increasingly popular. Heated tobacco sticks are not that harmful and are intended to replace cigarettes in the future. Swiss tobacco company Philip Morris also reacts to this. Blick has learned that the US company is expanding its location in Neuchâtel.

Philip Morris is investing over 13 million francs in the new facility in French-speaking Switzerland. These smoke-free products need to be produced there. The system will be the cradle of the new line of “prepared” heated tobacco sticks, so to speak.

A total of 66 million investments were made

This is not the first investment in the Neuchâtel location. Since 2017, financial expenditures have reached approximately 66 million francs. Philip Morris wants to stop selling cigarettes as quickly as possible and replace them with smoke-free products. These do not burn the tobacco, they only heat it. This means fewer toxins are released, which are less harmful to the consumer.

But heaters are not harmless: According to experts, the pollutants in the steam negatively affect the respiratory tract and there is still a risk of nicotine addiction.

In addition to the headquarters in Lausanne, Neuchâtel is also home to the company’s global research and development centre. More than 400 scientists, engineers and technicians work here. The production facility supplies products to the Swiss domestic market and exports to more than 40 countries worldwide. (wgr)
