1267 francs per person per night!: Holiday apartment providers are doing great business in the Spengler Cup

A lively atmosphere in the stadium, a spirited party in the tent and all amidst the breathtaking view of the Grisons mountains. From 26 to 31 December, the Spengler Cup discus will be thrown in Davos. The most important event for ice hockey fans at the end of the year. Owners of holiday homes welcome their guests with exorbitant prices.

A trip to the Spengler Cup actually makes the perfect Christmas gift. Tickets and overnight accommodations for the games are still available. The catch: Sleeping areas are not very affordable. Vacation rental owners smell this situation and rent out their apartments at high prices. Prices are increasing immeasurably on the booking platform Airbnb.

1267 francs per person per night

For example, those who decide on short notice pay a total of 985 francs per person per night for a three-night stay for six people. A second apartment directly at the Davos Convention Center costs a total of 19,009 francs for five guests for the same number of nights – 1267 francs per person per night!

Private hosts make a lot of money from Airbnb. Davos tourism officer Reto Branschi (64) explains the reason for this: “Apartments can be advertised anonymously on the Airbnb platform. Therefore, homeowners are not afraid to charge such high prices.”

An even bigger box is needed at the WEF

The Spengler Cup isn’t even the highlight of Davos holiday apartment prices. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) January 16-20, rents on Airbnb are sometimes twice as high. WEF attendees who have not yet booked accommodation can currently spend over 50,000 francs on a roof over their heads. The price is valid from Monday to Saturday. The price of another apartment, which is still available, is 46,082 francs.

Housing allocation to business bosses all over the world is basically regulated. WEF reserves slots in advance with Davos hotels and large apartment landlords. WEF attendees can then purchase them and don’t have to worry about prices on Airbnb and other platforms. Anyone who is not a celebrity WEF guest has no access to official quotas and is at the mercy of Airbnb and Co.’s rip-offs.

Tourism director Branschi assures that 95 percent of hoteliers and holiday home providers in Davos act fairly. The remaining five percent can be found on the mentioned platforms. And this is despite the fact that after the WEF the next big rush for Graubunden mountain village accommodation will be with ski holidays. Holiday home owners in Davos are already doing well. Even if they charge humane prices.
