It was only on Wednesday that unions called off the strike, originally planned for New Year’s Eve and Nativity on January 6, as the government offered to mediate; this was particularly important for Spain. However, the unions emphasized that these negotiations did not lead to a result acceptable to the employee representatives, so the strike call was reinstated for the days in January.
In the background, it can be seen that Iberia Airport Services, which is responsible for handling the aircraft, lost almost all of its contracts for major Spanish airports to competitors in a tender held in September, with the exception of Madrid-Barajas. This means that all airlines landing and taking off there in the future will no longer be responsible for the handling of their aircraft. Around 7,000 employees fear they will have to work under worse conditions for new license holders.
The unions want to ensure that Iberia at least takes over management of all aircraft owned by parent company IAG (Iberia, British Airways, Level, Vueling, Aer Lingus and Air Nostrum) at affected Spanish airports. Iberia rejected this due to cost.
