Signa Group purchased Hotel Bauer on the Grand Canal from American hedge fund Elliott in 2020. The purchase was accompanied by a comprehensive renovation plan that will see the creation of 90 luxury suites by 2025. The project is now in danger of freezing due to Signa instability.
According to the Milan newspaper “Corriere della Sera” reported on Friday, the Rosewood chain should have taken over the management of the hotel, whose value would increase to 400 million euros after the renovation. According to the plan, part of the building where Hotel Bauer is located would be converted into luxury stores. For now, it is doubtful whether the work will continue.
The first owners of the hotel were Austrian entrepreneur Julius Grünwald and his wife. In 1930, the new owner of Hotel Bauer became Ligurian shipbuilder Arnaldo Bennati. Under his leadership the hotel was completely restored.
During this extensive renovation, which lasted almost a decade, a new, modern unit was added to the hotel. Reopened in 1949 after renovations, the Liberty-style Hotel Bauer was Venice’s most modern and elegant luxury hotel. This is not Signa’s only facility in Italy. Its real estate portfolio also includes the Villa Eden resort on Lake Garda. (SDA)
