Fake AI ad videos are flooding YouTube. Zurich cantonal police warn about this.

“When I was a child, my family also went through difficult times, and now I want to help people in Switzerland.” Roger Federer (42) apparently says this in a TV interview that was shown as an ad on YouTube. Federer’s voice can be heard, his lips move with the words he speaks. Only: YouTube ads are fake.

Fake ads fill Swiss media portals

Advertising portals have long been flooded with fake ads featuring celebrities. Advertisements run not only on YouTube, but also on X and even on news portals like Blick. Photos of pop singer Beatrice Egli (35), SRF presenter Sandra Boner (49) and former “Tagesschau” spokesperson Beatrice Müller (63), among others, have already been misused to attract so-called news articles. With the rise of artificial intelligence, scammers are bringing out heavier weapons.

Victims should be persuaded to invest

Personalities such as Roger Federer and various federal parliament members are used to promote trading platforms using artificial intelligence manipulation. The videos trick inexperienced investors into thinking they can make significant profits quickly. The Zurich cantonal police publicly warned about manipulated videos on YouTube on its cybercrime page last week. According to Kapo Zurich, criminals spread the content to persuade potential victims to invest.

If you encounter such fake videos, Kapo Zurich recommends the following:

  • Report fake videos to the appropriate platform.
  • Stop communicating with scammers.
  • If you have provided your credit card information, have it blocked as soon as possible.
  • If you have transferred your e-banking login information, change them immediately.
  • Be increasingly critical of the originality of videos. Advances in technology, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, make manipulated video content increasingly interesting.

If you have already deposited money, you should contact your local police station directly and file a criminal complaint. (Snap)
