Swiss people’s meat consumption was fairly stable last year, despite all the prophecies of disaster. This is shown by figures from the Swiss meat industry body Proviande. The Swiss consume almost 51 kilograms of meat per capita. They mostly eat pork, at 20.7 kilograms, followed by poultry (15 kilograms) and beef (11 kilograms). Half of the total 452,200 tons of meat is sold in retail trade.

The number of employees in the sector, around 24,000, has also remained stable for some time, says Daniel Schnider (55), managing director of the Swiss meat trade association SFF. But the association’s president knows that the next few years will be difficult. “With the retirement of the baby boomer generation, many butcher shops are coming onto the market.” The association currently has 900 members, but there will be fewer. However, Schnider is positive about the future: “The number of boys who have the courage to take over a business is increasing.”

The association invests in young talents

The association has become more active: “We have restarted the recruitment of young talent with a new training fund,” says Schnider. The association uses the money to recruit new apprentices and train others. “The industry is gaining momentum again and interest among young people is increasing,” says Schnider.

The association is not particularly concerned about the trend towards meat alternatives at this time. Proviande’s numbers confirm this: The huge boom in plant-based substitutes has abated. In 2022, the share of the overall market increased by only 0.1 points compared to the previous year, reaching 3 percent.
