People surveyed by market researcher GfK want to spend an average of 411 francs on toys that should be under the Christmas tree. This budget is well below last year’s record value of 500 francs, GfK said in a statement published on Monday.

Consumers’ cautious mood is justified by concerns about inflation, rising health care costs and general economic uncertainty. Almost half of the participants stated that they wanted to consume more consciously and limit their spending in the new year.

The desire to spend money on toys has dropped this year, especially in physical stores. First of all, interest in traditional shopping malls has decreased in stationery stores. GfK expects an 8 percent decrease in sales here compared to the previous year.

Online shopping continues to be popular: “We expect a positive development in online Christmas shopping,” the statement said. (SDA)
