The results of the third edition of the Visa Payment Monitor, conducted in collaboration with Forsa, demonstrate this. Almost three-quarters (72%) of Swiss now prefer to use digital payment methods, according to a representative online survey of 1,000 people in Switzerland.

According to the survey, 27 percent of German-speaking Swiss people actively avoid stores where they cannot make digital payments. This rate is 34 percent in French-speaking Switzerland and 37 percent in Ticino. This value is 29 percent across Switzerland.

However, digital payment will not work everywhere in 2023. A third (36%) complain of having a digital payment rejected in store at least once a month. Consumers mostly miss digital payment options in smaller stores (17%) and weekly and Christmas markets (20% and 17% respectively).

Compared to previous versions of the research, it also appears that people over the age of 60 have made significant progress in contactless mobile payments. One in four people already make mobile payments; this is a significant increase compared to the previous year (+14 points). The young generation under the age of 36 also continues to grow here.

For comparison: More than half of those under 36 (52%) have paid at the checkout using a smartphone or wearable device (52%).

The Swiss are even more smartphone savvy when they go online. Overall, seven in ten (72%) people in Switzerland say they shop online using mobile devices; This is an increase of 7 percentage points over the previous year.

Advert

The survey found that two-thirds (67%) of consumers now store their credit cards digitally. With the introduction of modern debit cards, which can now also be used to pay online, 59 percent will now store their cards in digital format. (SDA)
