For many people, these are an integral part of the Advent season: company Christmas parties. Some go out for a fancy meal with their teammates, others throw a lavish party for the entire workforce. But there are some traps lurking. A few different rules apply for a company party than for a party with friends. Employees of many companies are expected to attend the celebration. Of course, no one can be forced, but only those who have a good reason (tickets for an event purchased well in advance or family commitments) and clearly communicate this should take the opportunity.

While year-end events often have a more casual atmosphere than the office, it’s still important to choose attire that looks professional. Avoid outfits that are too casual or revealing and instead opt for something that reflects your style and respects the formal nature of the event.

Punctuality and professionalism go hand in hand. Arriving on time, especially for a smaller Christmas dinner, shows your commitment to the event and your respect for your colleagues and superiors.

Take the time to greet your employees and don’t immediately head to the bar with your best friends. A simple “Hello” or “Good evening” with a warm smile creates a positive atmosphere from the very beginning.

“Never drink more than two units of alcohol at a company party” is the invariable rule of a colleague who has so far achieved this very well. A glass of Prosecco, a beer or a glass of wine with your meal: Alcohol is also available at company parties. That’s why it is very important not to overdo it while consuming it. Limit consumption and remember that you are in a professional environment. Anyone dancing on the table is sure to cause office gossip, but in the smartphone age they will also quickly insert themselves into office chatter, which is rarely welcomed by bosses.

Focus on light and positive topics. Avoid political, religious or other controversial topics that could lead to disagreements. The aim is to create a pleasant atmosphere for everyone. And it’s always inappropriate: Insults, racist comments and sexual harassment are unacceptable at a Christmas party – as anywhere else – and can lead to dismissal!

If games or activities are planned, participate enthusiastically. This strengthens team spirit and shows your commitment to the team.

This is especially true for Christmas dinners in restaurants: Give everyone the opportunity to express themselves. Don’t dominate the conversation, actively listen and participate in conversations that include all participants.

Be aware of your behavior. Avoid inappropriate jokes, inappropriate comments or any inappropriate behavior. These are professional, albeit festive, events. And avoid closeness; These belong to private life, not to the corporate party.

Avoid staying until the end of the evening. Leaving at a reasonable time shows that you are aware of the next day’s obligations and respect others’ time. And what is not possible: being sick the next day. If you can party, you can work.
