Ants, called “ants”, constantly buzz in circles and unload the packages to the right place. The new facility in Wallisellen is the largest in the world.

As Christmas approaches, there is a state of emergency at postal parcel centres: systems are closed for only two hours a day, between 4am and 6am. Swiss Post’s employees currently process almost a million packages a day. That’s 60 percent more than an average day of the year.

It is used for the first time in the world at the Wallisellen sorting facility, which opened in June this year. Gray robots called “ants” constantly move in circles with a quiet buzzing sound, carrying packages to the correct conveyors. The labels are read in a scanning tunnel so the “ant” knows which zip code the package contains.
