Accidents on Swiss slopes cause financial costs of approximately 600 million francs every year. (archive image)

The number of injured people varies from year to year and depends on snow and weather conditions, among other factors, according to the press release. The number of injuries has been falling since 2014 because there are fewer and fewer people on Swiss tracks.

Last winter season, 14,000 people had to be treated in emergency rooms after accidents. Skiers were mostly treated for knee injuries and snowboarders for wrist injuries.

The BFU said skiing and snowboarding were the sports with the third and fourth highest risk of serious injury. Six percent of injuries each year are classified as serious.

Accident data were recorded by cable car companies and evaluated by BFU. About one-fifth of accidents were recorded. They serve as a data source to predict all accidents in Swiss snow sports.
