Café cream has cost German-speaking Swiss consumers dearly this year. The average price in cafes, cafeterias, cafe-bakeries and cafe-bistros increased by 10 kuruş compared to the previous year. This was the second sharp price increase in a row, following a 9 centimeter increase in the previous year. This is shown in the food and beverage industry association Cafetiersuisse’s assessment of the selling prices actually charged.

Zurich is at the top, Solothurn is the cheapest

The average price of new coffee is 4.49 francs. However, sometimes there may be significant differences between cantons. The price rose to its highest level in Solothurn, from 4.17 francs to 4.33 francs. However, the canton ranks last and offers the cheapest coffee. Meanwhile, there is a changing of the guard at the top: With the current price increase, the canton of Zurich (from 4.58 francs to 4.69 francs) is taking the crown from the canton of Zug (from 4.62 francs to 4.66 francs). Zurich also beat the competition when it comes to the highest price: According to the survey, the most expensive cafe cream costs an incredible 6.50 francs!

“The increase in the price of coffee is well above the Swiss inflation rate, with an increase of 2.59 percent,” said Cafetiersuisse President Hans-Peter Oettli. The association states that the main cost factors affecting the sales price are wages and rental costs. “The price increase in 2023 will be significant for the second year in a row,” says Oettli. This is the response to the increase in all relevant cost factors in the catering industry. “It can be assumed that further price increases will be necessary in the coming months.” Cafetiersuisse does not give price advice and states that pricing is at the institutions’ discretion.

Prices could rise up to 15 percent in 2024

Cafetiersuisse collected prices for the 36th time in German-speaking Switzerland, including the French-speaking part of the canton of Bern, using a telephone survey. Since 2013, the price of coffee has increased by 36 kuruş, or 8.7 percent. Essentially, the survey covers the same companies every year. In order to draw a clearer picture, especially in rural regions and cantons, the survey database has been expanded to include 650 companies since 2017.

The increase in coffee prices in 2023 was below the association’s expectations. As Cafetiersuisse reports, ongoing price increases in almost all areas continue to lead to significantly higher fixed costs in the catering industry. Therefore, it can be assumed that there will be an increase of around 5 to 15 percent in 2024. L-GAV’s social partners also agreed to increase the minimum wage at all wage levels for the coming year.

Switzerland ranks first in coffee consumption: 1,069 cups of coffee were drunk per capita in 2021. Black gold is more popular only in Germany and Norway. Data on coffee consumption for 2022/2023 is not yet available.
