The Vatican announced that Pope Francis would instead celebrate the prayer in his private chambers, which would then be broadcast on screens in St. Peter’s Square.

The 86-year-old pope asked an aide to read his text at his weekly general audience on Wednesday, saying he was “not feeling well yet because of this flu.” He looked very tired and out of breath.

Due to his illness, the head of the Catholic Church also had to cancel his participation in the UN climate conference (COP28) in Dubai. On Saturday, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s number two, read the Pope’s speech in which he called for “accelerating ecological change.”

The Pope, who will turn 87 in December, has been experiencing health problems for a long time. He has used a wheelchair several times recently due to severe knee pain.
