McDonald’s, located at the corner of the train station building in Zurich-Enge, became history after 24 years.

“Unfortunately, we have to inform you that this McDonald’s restaurant will have to close after exactly 24 years on November 20, 2023.” Hungry travelers and residents recently found this information on a billboard at the covered entrance of McDonald’s at the Zurich-Enge train station.

The US chain is not another victim of Quartierlädeli’s demise. As CH Media recently noted, the closure has more to do with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) upgrading its own train stations and increasingly relying on full-service restaurants rather than takeaways for its gastro mixes.

In the present case in Zurich-Enge, SBB did not extend the lease and re-advertised the facility. An SBB spokesperson confirmed to “Züri Today” that the railway chose the concept that “best meets the needs of customers in and around this location”. From spring 2024, the Burgermeister restaurant chain will be located at the current “Mäc” location.

Snacks are getting more expensive

What Burgermeister markets as the “best burgers in town” focuses on quality. The cheeseburger, which includes Swiss beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, cucumber and more, costs 16.90 francs here. With a side dish (fries, salad or coleslaw) and a drink, it costs 24.80 francs.

For example, at McDonald’s, the Cheeseburger Royal costs 12.90 francs as a menu item.

If you want to eat a McDonald’s burger near Enge train station, you will have to continue towards Sihlcity shopping centre. Burgermeister is currently expanding steadily and currently has offices in Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and St. It has 13 locations in St. Gallen.
