A great honor for architect Roger Bolthauser (58) and his team. The Swiss won the Holcim Prize for sustainable building as part of the Architecture Biennale in Venice (I). They received the award for the wooden high-rise building H1 in the new Zwhatt district in Regensdorf ZH.

What makes this honor special for the Swiss is that awards are normally given only to buildings that have already been built, whereas the shell of the H1 high-rise was only half constructed.

Blick reaches out to Roger Bolthauser on his way to London. He sees the award as a confirmation of his previous work: “We have been working on the issue of sustainable construction based on materials such as wood or clay for 20 years. The price shows that we chose the right strategy. “This recognition is very important to us.”

Integrated solar system

At 75 meters high, Switzerland’s tallest wooden house is currently being built in the Zwhatt district. This provides space for approximately 2,000 people and saves approximately 25 percent CO2 over the entire life cycle2 Compared to traditional construction. “It is not just the size that is important, but rather that we can demonstrate how tall buildings of this size can be built using the renewable raw material wood,” says Boltshauser.

The wood used for construction comes from the Swiss Jura; Half of the electricity need is met by the solar energy system placed on the facade and roof.
