Medical reports from controversial company: More than half of IV cases ‘fully functional’

In October, the Federal Social Insurance Office (BSV) announced that IV would no longer work with the PMEDA AG of the controversial neurologist Henning Mast (70) in the future. The official followed the recommendation of the Federal Commission for Quality Assurance in Medical Evaluations (EKQMB).

This week EKQMB published the relevant investigation report. This shows that PMEDA opposes disability retirement significantly more often than other specialist bodies in 2022/2023: “In PMEDA assessments, the ability to fully work in an adapted activity was evidenced in 56.7 per cent of cases. In contrast, all other very “disciplinary evaluation agencies document the ability to fully function in an adapted activity in only 26.4 percent of cases,” he says.

Additionally, chart summary (“incomplete”), anamnesis (“based mainly on written self-reports”), evaluation of findings (“unclear who actually did it”), evaluation (“relevant findings from partial reports are often disregarded”), treatment their proposal (“did not meet established standards”) and consensus evaluation (“did not meet BSV specifications”) were criticized.

PMEDA denied blame

PMEDA does not take kindly to the report: “An evaluation of PMEDA’s work was carried out without the legally required prior publication of EKQMB’s own quality criteria,” criticizes owner Mast. Additionally, the report is “formally and substantially incomplete” because it does not include comparative quality control of reports from other agencies and does not contain any information regarding forensic investigations. Mast announced that he would “immediately” decide on legal action against the people and institutions involved in the incident.

When asked how to explain the fact that PMEDA certified significantly more IV applicants as “fully operable,” Mast said: “The purported difference has not been seriously proven or examined.” In many press releases in recent years, BSV has highlighted the lack of comparability of work ability assessments between assessment institutes.
