SBB’s digital services leave much to be desired.
Erich Bürgler

The year is 2023 and there is still no option to buy tickets from abroad on the SBB mobile application. This is not the railway company’s only digital weakness: anyone who books an international train on the SBB website must accept that it is not possible to choose an exact seat. The only thing you can request is an aisle or window seat. SBB’s outdated reservation system is particularly annoying for multiple passengers traveling together. The only option is to book a place nearby. However, it is not guaranteed whether the seats will actually be next to each other.

Will definitive seat reservations be made at SBB soon?

Possible abroad

The railways of neighboring countries such as Italy and Germany do this much better. They have been offering precise seat selection on their website or app for a long time. Swiss customers need to rely on foreign railways’ digital offerings to ensure good service when traveling internationally. Cross-border train traffic faces stiff competition from low-cost airlines. Climate-friendly travel by train with EasyJet and Co. only if booking available. can compete with. SBB has already promised improvements several times. During the reign of Ducrot’s predecessor, Andreas Meyer, SBB announced that international tickets would be introduced through the application in 2017.

Ducrot admitted at the end of 2020 that the reservation system in international traffic was SBB’s “Achilles heel”. Now an SBB spokesperson says that selling international tickets on the SBB app “should be possible in 2024.” CH Media newspapers had recently reported that special reservations for the seat would also come. However, SBB is being cautious. A spokesman said introduction in 2024 was being reviewed but could not yet be confirmed. Fortunately SBB trains are faster and more reliable than IT development.
