Huge differences depending on energy source: Swiss households suffer from higher energy costs

1/6
High energy prices have affected Swiss households in very different ways.

Market prices for electricity, for example, have calmed significantly since exceptionally high levels in the summer of 2022, while household costs continue to rise. This is also because electricity generation or supply costs reach households with long delays. Because these are regulated by the government and are adjusted only once a year.

Electricity prices for final consumers, which increased by 27 percent at the beginning of 2023, will increase further by around 18 percent at the end of the year. But there are strong regional differences, as seen in Blick’s interactive map. There are suppliers such as BKW, who supply their customers from their own power plants and are therefore more or less unaffected by market fluctuations.

The next price shock in gas is approaching

Energy is much more expensive than before the crisis

Swiss people are still paying much more to heat with natural gas than before the boom. At Zurich’s major supplier Energie 360 Grad, for example, the standard product has cost 12.2 cents per kilowatt hour since October.

This is again well below the October 2022 high of 18.2 cents per kilowatt-hour. But until September 2021, a normal heating customer of the apartment owner paid only 7.0 cents per kilowatt hour for the standard product, and in February 2022 – at the beginning of the Ukrainian War – still 11.7 centimeters.

Heating oil prices remain high

The price of heating oil is similar to natural gas. Unlike gas, the heating oil tank is usually filled only once a year, usually in the fall. According to “Heizoel24.ch”, a homeowner with an oil heater currently pays around 120 francs per 100 liters for a normal order volume.

In February 2022 – after Russian troops invaded Ukraine – almost 200 francs per 100 liters had to be temporarily paid. From November 2022 the price returned to around 100 francs but did not return to previous lows. Because in the summer of 2021, the payment was clearly less than 90 francs, and in the summer of 2020, even less than 70 francs. And since May 2023, prices have increased again. (SDA/smt)
