Eleven days ago, the post office had previously confirmed rumors that its subsidiary Direct Mail Company (DMC) would cease operations in June 2024. 3,855 part-time jobs need to be cut, compared to 72 full-time jobs.
Postal Board President Christian Levrat (53) explains in an interview with “SonntagsZeitung” that a solution will be found for the 72 DMC permanent employees. Things look less rosy for the remaining jobs, typically junior positions at 8 to 20 percent: “Nobody expects that we can offer thousands of jobs at 10 percent,” says Levrat. “But we have to do our best.”
The institutional level is also affected by postal savings schemes. Levrat cannot yet say how many positions are affected. “The goal is to become ten percent more efficient. “This amounts to approximately 40 million francs.”
In the digital space, the post office is also working on digital mailboxes as well as e-voting, according to Levrat. «Nowadays people want to receive their important letters digitally. “In addition to the mailbox at the front door, you also need a mailbox in your pocket, on your smartphone.” This offer is forward-looking. But the post office does not want to remove physical mailboxes.
Levrat says that the postal system is generally working. However, it is “unstable” and needs transformation. (SDA/rae)
