Tesla has won a lawsuit in the US over the role of its autopilot assist system in a fatal crash. The Elon Musk-led automaker managed to convince the jury in Riverside, California, that Autopilot could not be held responsible for the crash, financial service Bloomberg reported from the court.

The 37-year-old Tesla driver, who was traveling with his fiancee and son, went off the road on a Southern California highway in 2019, crashed into a tree and burst into flames. While the driver lost his life, his fiancee and son escaped with injuries.

What did Tesla know?

Survivors in the lawsuit accused Tesla of saying Autopilot was responsible for the crash. They also argued that the company knew about weaknesses in the system and gave owners a false sense of security.

Among other things, Tesla pointed out that when using the autopilot system, drivers must pay attention to the traffic situation and be ready to take control at any time. There is also no concrete evidence that the autopilot system was activated before the crash.

Emergency vehicle crash

Tesla vehicles record a variety of data that is often helpful in incident investigations. However, sometimes after accidents such as fire, this information may no longer be available.

The autopilot system is controversial. While Musk and Tesla emphasized that this made vehicles safer, there were many accidents that attracted the attention of US regulators. This includes a number of incidents where Teslas crashed into emergency vehicles parked on the side of the road with their hazard lights on. There are other lawsuits related to accidents expected to be heard next year. (pbe/SDA)
