What has long been standard at Coop is now also used at its rival Migros: Automatically printed receipts are eliminated. Instead the receipt will only be printed upon express request. This applies to both self-checkout and human checkout.

At Blick’s request, Migros confirmed that the new collection regime is now being implemented nationwide. In some branches the customer already has a choice, but in some branches the invoice is now included as standard with every purchase. All Migros cash registers must be converted by the end of November.

Migros is far behind its rival Coop: For almost two years, Coop has been issuing receipts only upon express request. Why did it take so long for Migros? “This change in terms of IT technology was not possible for us before,” Migros writes.

Mountains of waste paper disappear

Only Cumulus members were able to opt out of the printed receipt if they had stored it in their account. All customers now have this option. Migros says it wants to save over 100 tons of paper a year by ending standard printed receipts.

However, this does not mean that Migros cash registers are completely paperless; Other receipts, such as warranty certificates or vouchers for additional Cumulus points, will continue to be printed.

Migros started using more environmentally friendly paper in its cash registers at the beginning of this year, and since then the receipts have started to be gray-blue instead of the old white. Since then, Migros invoices can be thrown into waste paper. For many customers, there is no need for destruction as invoices are no longer required.
