Switzerland wants to speed up the boarding procedure and make it safer.

Switzerland offers cameras for boarding. Lufthansa’s subsidiary carried out the relevant tests from April to June. And passengers were counted using artificial intelligence (AI). Successfully. In the future, all passengers will be filmed boarding the plane. This is what the travel portal “Travelnews” writes.

The mechanical counter operated by flight attendants will soon be finished. And the distinctive “click” sound heard by every passenger boarding the plane. It becomes a part of aviation history. Like the captain’s salute or “drills” with life jackets and oxygen masks.

What do travelers say?

Switzerland wants to increase security and ease the burden on flight attendants with the new digital system. It is not yet clear how passengers will receive the camera installed in the cabin. However, according to the Lufthansa subsidiary, data protection must be guaranteed.

What is certain is that the system works. “The test operation was successful: we achieved the objectives of basically counting people at the gate of the aircraft, the software reliably counts the number of people boarding the aircraft,” a Swiss spokesperson for Travelnews said.

But there’s still a problem

However, the system cannot yet distinguish whether a passenger, a crew member or cleaning staff entered the plane. There’s a reason for this: “Cleaning and airport staff wear different uniforms and identifying characteristics at each destination,” the spokesperson explains. “So the AI model needs to be trained differently in each case.” However, the airline believes that this problem will be brought under control soon.

“As a result of the successful testing phase, Switzerland plans to replace the manual counting process at boarding with automatic and digital passenger counting with artificial intelligence,” the spokesperson said, somewhat technically. And he adds: “We are currently preparing the next implementation steps. However, due to the ongoing tender for an IT partner, we cannot provide further details yet.” (pbe)
