Unionists versus builders: negotiations for higher wages in construction fail

In a statement published on Wednesday, the association claimed that construction workers currently earn the highest commercial wages in Switzerland. Additionally, their salaries have increased by 4 percent since 2022.

In 2023, the social partners were to agree on a collective wage increase of 150 francs per month. This corresponds to an increase of between 1.9 and 3 percent, according to wage research. In 2022, individual wage increases would be 1.5 percent.

Inflation is expected to stabilize in 2024. According to the association, those working in the construction sector receive an average salary of 6,300 francs for 13 months.

Unia and Syna requested corrections

The Unia and Syna unions opposed this. Master builders association insists on zero round and breaks off negotiations. In real terms, wages will fall. This is incomprehensible, irresponsible and dangerous as prices, rents and health insurance premiums rise.

At the same time, sales in the construction industry are at record levels and there is a serious shortage of skilled workers. The cost of living compensation denied was “disastrous”. Meanwhile, the master builders association is advising its members not to sign any contracts without automatic cost-of-living adjustments. This is true.

It is even more incomprehensible that the association management rejected the general wage increase in the third round of negotiations. Unia and Syna are calling on the master builders’ association’s delegates to correct this “disrespect” and bring the association’s leadership back to the negotiating table. (SDA)
