Chaos in the US Congress: US Republicans nominate fourth candidate for leadership of the House of Representatives

Shortly after the failure of the third candidate for the leadership of the House of Representatives, US Republicans nominated their fourth candidate in just two weeks, Mike Johnson. The representative from the US state of Louisiana won the intraparty vote, Republican representative and conference chair Elise Stefanik announced on Tuesday (local time). Thus, Johnson emerged as the candidate to replace President Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted three weeks ago.

Recently, nominee Tom Emmer threw in the towel just hours after his nomination. Before that, it was clear that the Republican caucus leader had little chance of winning the third-highest state office in the United States, given the resistance within the party.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who was originally nominated by Republicans, withdrew his candidacy after it became clear that he would not be able to secure the required majority. Jim Jordan, the far-right candidate who was later nominated, clearly failed in three attempts at the plenary. The group then withdrew the nomination of former President Donald Trump’s confidant last Friday.

The House of Representatives has been paralyzed for three weeks and is therefore unable to pass any legislation or new military aid to Israel and Ukraine. The previous Republican “speaker,” Kevin McCarthy, was ousted on October 3 by a revolt by far-right extremists within his own ranks. Weeks of chaos followed the search for a successor.
