Brazen thieves stole 400 kilos of gold and 53 kilos of banknotes at Canada’s Toronto-Pearson Airport on April 17, 2023.

Spicy: The gold and money arrived from Switzerland on Air Canada flight AC881 from Zurich to Toronto. A lawsuit filed by security company Brink’s now brings new details to light.

Raiffeisen and Valcambi are right in the middle

Raiffeisen Switzerland and Switzerland-based precious metals refining company Valcambi hired Brink’s to provide security and logistics services in moving valuables from Zurich to Toronto, according to an Oct. 6 court filing. Brink arranged for the items to be shipped using an Air Canada program called AC Secure. This offers “special treatment for high-value cargo” for a higher fee.

But it turns out safety wasn’t that far away. According to Brink’s, the incident went like this: After the flight arrived at 16:00, the valuables were transferred to Air Canada’s customs warehouse at 17:50. At 18.30 a man arrived, showed the pickup documents and then loaded the valuable cargo and walked away.

But he was a fraudster who presented fake documents. Brink’s accuses Air Canada of failing to implement security protocols to monitor or restrict the unidentified person’s access to facilities. Additionally, the authenticity of the documents was not adequately checked.

Toronto Airport denies any accusations. No security devices were broken: The fraudster, whose identity has not yet been determined, came to the customs warehouse from the visitor entrance and gained access to the gold and money there.

Legal case continues

Air Canada and the recipient of the cargo, Toronto-Dominion Bank, did not comment on the matter. Under pressure from Raiffeisen and Valcambi, Brink’s demands back from Air Canada the value of the cargo, including undisclosed damages.

Strange detail: A similar incident occurred in 1952. A shipment of gold was stolen from the cargo of Trans-Canada Airlines, the predecessor of Air Canada, at Toronto’s Malton Airport, Pearson’s predecessor. 420 kilos of gold disappeared. Neither the gold nor the perpetrators have been found so far.
