Within the scope of Migros Culture Percent Classics, the pride program that star pianist Fazıl Say (53) must complete between 23-26 October is Zurich, Bern, Geneva and Lucerne. Nothing will come of this anymore. Migros quickly removed the Turkish musician from the program following comments on social media about conflicts in the Middle East.
The detail giant, which supports cultural and social initiatives with Migros Culture Percentage, confirmed that Blick was expelled. A spokesman said, “The reason for this is the statements made by Fazıl Say to the press after the terrorist attack against Israel, which are indefensible for Migros.”
In particular, it concerns posts on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). On Tuesday, Say shared a post by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (69) in which he blamed the Israelis for the events at Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. It is not yet known exactly how the deaths occurred.
Say thanked Erdoğan for “this common sense statement” and called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) to be brought to justice for “war crimes, genocide and massacres”.
Also, Say in X is now commenting on the cancellation of their concerts. Say said, “Like everyone else, he was saddened by the terrorist incidents.” But he also finds “Netanyahu’s futureless war policy very wrong and cruel.” Ultimately, he found Erdoğan’s approach “logical and peaceful”.
It is strange and worrying that this creates anxiety and the unilateral cancellation of the concert. He was confident that he could rely on freedom of expression in Europe. “Opinions should not influence our professional lives,” says Say.
In addition to his music, Say is also considered an extremely political person. He had already caused a stir in his home country when he was sentenced to a ten-month conditional prison sentence by a Turkish court in 2013.
Even though Migros Say announced its events just a few days before the concerts, the concerts continue. Instead of Say, Swiss pianist Louis Schwizgebel (35) will perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
